REALLY REALLY rare names are often a sign that the name is not as the original was. I found only 2 entries for the name in the family files at rootsweb; both seemed to connect to the Dominican Republic. Which does not rule out that your name has French background way back.

the above genealogy links to Haiti, but shows French background as well.
The real question is exactly where your ancestors lived and died, even if they were in France some 100s of years back. Your name may be one thing, but remember that (using the maiden name), you have 8 gr grandparents, each of those will have their own surname and history. One more generation back, there are then 16.
If this is an assignment, French would be a good guess for your last name. But that is far from being an accurate summary of your heritage.

i dont know about the origion of your family name but by cuzins family name is dupiton. Weird 0_o?

Not sure of the name itself, it almost sounds french to me. What is your ethnicity from what you know?

When finding the origin of your last name you should know the following;
If your ancestors came here through Ellis Island, there is a great possibility that the name got changed a bit through the immigration process. It could be spelt the way the booker thought it sounded, or they could have misread the writing or just made something up all together.

If your ancestors were brought over as workers or slaves (sorry if thats offensive to anyone) then they could very well have had the last name of the family they worked for, there for the origin of your name would not be of your family but of those they worked for.

If your ancestors are from a place that was colonized, again their last name could have been changed to match the country that was colonizing them (why certain countries in Africa speak french, and the people have french last names)...but at least it could still lead you to where they were from.

goodluck on your search, hopefully that can help you a little bit!
