Question:Hello, I have been trying to figure out the meaning of my last name. My family originally came from the Dominican Republic and our last name is Osiez But i never heard of any other latino with this last name. At first i thouht maybe my grandfather was fraom haiti because Osiez comes from the french word osi-osiez which means to dare. Can some one help me.

All I can do, as a result of some cursory research, is confirm the the surname Osiez is of French Origin. At least, in 5 encounters while searching Osiez.......all led me to France.

Good luck on your "hunt" - it might be a "tough one," but with tenacity and a little luck, I'm betting your research will pay off.

Best help is to explain that not all names HAVE a meaning. Some might, but it is not a rule.
My experience has been that the uncommon names are frequently a variation of something else. In order to know for sure, you would want to identify the person, his/her place of origin from records, and use those records to find the parent(s). Sounds as if you don't have a verified record of grandpa's origin. That is what you need.
Surnames are misleading, if you try to figure where the name comes from.
