Position:Home>Genealogy> Why is it that in Filipino culture, everyone is an aunt, uncle or cousin even if

Question:I am of Filipino descent, but I am bothered when people claim to be my aunt, uncle or cousin and I cannot precisely trace how. They simply respond by saying that our grandparents were cousins. I keep asking older generations, but nobody has given me a satisfactory answer.

Not only can I not deny they are my aunt and uncle; I must address them as "aunt" or "uncle" even if they are 10 degrees away from me. I also must invite them to my wedding, and they will probably come, thus denying space to closer friends.

whats funny is I work in a pharmacy where the majority are Filipino, and they call eachother in their language aunt and uncle. All of them refer to eachother as that. I wondered why it is. I know a few of them are actually related but I doubt they all are eachothers aunts and uncles. Sorry I couldn't actually answer your question but I wanted to give my story for fun :)

well sad to say but when you die they go with you. darn!
