Position:Home>Genealogy> I'm trying to change my last name to the family last name how long will it t

Question:Molly's being a little generous with time. Unless you live in a tiny town where the courts have little to do, you won't see it happening in less than 3-6 months, some even taking a year. Some courts are so full that it will take 6 months just to get on the docket. Then you have to post the proposed name change in the largest newspaper in the area for a certain amount of time, etc. That doesn't mean you couldn't start using the name in everyday use. You just couldn't sign any legal documents by that name or try getting credit in that name until it's finalized.

Go to an attorney, fill out the paperwork and have the attorney file it with the court. The judge will sign it and then you're done. Costs a couple of hundred dollars and takes about 6 weeks. Then you get to take the court papers and change all your ID to reflect the name change.
