Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: "Tropin"

is it german or russian? or something else?

The 1900 census has 5, 2 born in Russia and 3 born in New York.

The New York Passenger List 1820-1957 have 7, one each listed ethnicity has German, American and Russian. The other 4 did not indicate ethnicity.

Rootsweb(free site) has 88 entries in family trees for Tropin. Pull up the site and look at the entries. If you see something that interest you, probe on a name and it will give you the name and email address of the submitter.

The same surname can frequently belong to people of more than one national origin.

In the UK census, one in 1901 came from Holland. One in 1871 came from Ireland. Those are the only exact matches in the 1841-1901 England & Wales census collection.

It's also worth considering that people from non-English speaking nations who emigrated to the UK or North America often changed the spelling and sometimes pronounciation of their names to make them appear less "foreign" (especially for people with German sounding/looking names during the wars, which applied to many from Scandinavia, Holland etc).

Searching the web, there are hardly any references to this name, so I think it's quite likely that the name has been altered at some point or is an extremely rare name even in the place of origin.
