While you have a lot of well-meaning answers, the truth is that you won't be able to trace Mexican genealogy on the internet. They simply don't have the infrastructure and money that it would take to create the databases and maintain them. In addition, pre-1900, all of the records were maintained by the Roman Catholic Church. They were never put in the custody of the government. So to trace Mexican genealogy, you need to work with the parishes in the towns where your family lived and keep going back one generation at a time. It's very time-consuming and you can't just ask the priest to send you "everything on the Munoz family". He doesn't have the time (nor patience) to figure out your lineage for you.

If you have the time and the money, travel down there and you can do the research in about a month. You have to be painstakingly meticulous in recording everything that you find. I lost count at how many children were named Jose and Maria in any given family, from one generation to the next. It's easy to confuse them. If your family wasn't Catholic 150 years ago, you're done. There's nothing more to search.

As for getting far enough back to figure out which country in Europe you ancestors originated, it's impossible to speculate. France and Spain are the two most likely, but there are a slew of Germans and Lebanese who flocked to Mexico in the 1800s.

Any country that used to be part of the Spanish empire mandated that its records be kept by the Church (the same was true of France until that pesky revolution). It's impossible to find civil records. Even if they still exist, they weren't of any form that you're used to. They're not indexed and they definitely are not on the internet. It could take months to even figure out if there were records kept about any members of your family...and even then we're only talking land records and wills. They could be useful IF THEY EXIST, but finding them takes sheer patience and a healthy bank account.

Set the country to "Mexico". Don't try for anyone born after 1920 or so; you'll have to get to your grandparents and maybe great grandparents off the Internet.

Don't put in too much, either; just name, birth date with a range of 5 years, birth place if you get 300 possibilities the first time.

Collect vital information (birth date & place, where & when they married, etc.) on your parents and then work backwards collecting information on your grandparents, then your great-grandparents and so forth. Hopefully you will eventually find records that will tell you what European country your ancestors may have come from. Just remember, just as you have 2 parents & 4 grandparents to research, you will also have 8 great-grandparents & 16 great-great-grandparents to research. Be prepared for a lot of work!
With any luck though, you will link up with others researching one of your lines and they will assist you or even share their work with you.
Best of luck!
