Are there any census reports between 1860 when he was born and 1937 when he died that i can get my hands on http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?o... someone has researched it and yes, there is an Alexander. Researching birth registration records may help in the county where they were born in Scotland. I'd also contact the J.M. Barrie Society. This would also be an interesting research project for the PBS show The History Detectives. If you didn't mention a country, we can't tell if you are in the USA, UK, Canada or Australia. I suspect UK because I don't know who JM Barrie was. You can look at the 1790 - 1930 US censuses at Mormon churches that have Family History Centers, if you mean in the USA. The UK didn't have a census in 1860; theirs are in the"1" years. The censuses that are of particular use to you are those containing Alexander, as proof of his link to James' family: 1851, Kirriemuir (all born Kirriemuir): David Barrie 36 Manufacturer of Brown Linen Margaret 32. Alexander 9 Mary 6 Jean Ann 4 Elisabeth 2 1861 Kirriemuir (all b Kirriemuir) David Barrie 45 Linen Manufacturer Margaret 42 Mary E 18 Jane Ann 14 David O 8 Sarah M 5 Isabella F 3 James M 11months 1871 Kirriemuir (all b Kirriemuir) David Barrie 56 Clerk Margaret 51 Algdery (Alexander!) 29 HM inspector of Schools Jane Ann 24 Isabella 13 Margaret 7 These censuses prove that James M and Alexander came from the same family. Jean/Jane Ann remains a consistent throughout the censuses, as she did not marry and remained with her parents until at least her 40s I have the following which might be helpful: 1901, 12 Canaan Lane, Newington, Edinburgh Alexander Ogilvy Barrie. 59. HM inspector of Schools. B Kirriemuir Mary 45 b Edinburgh Lilian 22 Student of Arts. B Dumfries Charles 20 Student of Arts. B Dumfries William 18 Student of Arts. B Dumfries Dorothy 14 Scholar B Dumfries Mary 11 Scholar B Dumfries The baptisms of Kirriemuir up to 1854 are transcribed to IGI www.familysearch.org Alexander Ogilvy Barrie 26th Mar 1842 Mary & Edward Barrie 26th Jan 1845 Jean Ann Barrie 28th Mar 1847 E. Barrie 1st April 1849 (This must be Elizabeth) Agnes Barrie 1st Jan 1851 David Ogilvy Barrie 6th Mar 1853 Scottish records almost always include the mother's maiden name, so in IGI you can search for children of David Barrie and Margaret Ogilvy and it will provide other records in addition, such as more of the children and some birthdates (uploaded by other researchers). David and Margaret married in Kirriemuir on 25th Feb 1844, David Barrie appears to have been baptised 30th Oct 1814 to Alexander Barrie & May Mitchell in Kirriemuir Margaret Ogilvy (Ogilvie) was baptised in Kirriemuir on 22nd Aug 1819 to David Ogilvy & Isobel Watson The census transcripts here are from ancestry.co.uk (subscription). At the moment, they don't have the rights to upload the original images of Scottish census returns. If you want to view these, you would need to buy credits with scotlandspeople, though these transcriptions should ensure you don't waste any money viewing various families looking for yours. |
