It's actually a rare variant (name mangle) of Zindel, Zundel, Sindel, etc.

It's origins are Germanic and since it sort of means "silk" it probably was a surname taken from someone who sells, trades or works with silk.

I don't think you can tell what a person's religion is by their surname.

Maybe German Jew. No meanings or origins at surname web site I use. Might be misspelled at time of immigration.
