Found a Dawson GREEN (no ending e) in Gwinett, Georgia 1870 Census (he was 12 so that would be the right age). The family is...

Lucas Green, Head, b. abt. 1837 Georgia (farm hand)
Lizzie, wife, b. abt 1826 Georgia
Dawson, son b. abt. 1858 Ga.
Martha, dau b. abt. 1863 Ga.
Mary, dau b. abt 1868 Ga.

Then in the 1900 census for Princinct 4 in Harris, Texas I found the following (again, surname GREEN without the ending e)

Oh yea, just for jollies I took a guess and made an assumption that Dawson's middle name Pinkney MIGHT be his mother's surname. I checked the regions around Gwinett, Georgia and there were quite a few Pinkney families there. Might be a clue.
