Position:Home>Genealogy> Where does the last name shevchuk come from?

Question:Alphabetically, it's not spelled according to any of the European traditions. Phonetically, it's a Slavic name and could come from any of a dozen countries in Central Europe, from Poland to the Ukraine to the Czech Republic or Slovakia or Bulgaria, even Albania or parts of Russia and Belarus. There's quite a bit of ground to cover where Slavic names developed. The only way to determine where your own line originated is to find out the names of your immigrant ancestors, then look them up on the two major databases with European immigrants...http://www.ellisisland.org or http://www.castlegarden.org

Note that on both of these sites, you can use partial names or wildcards so that you can find the original spelling, not just the Americanized spelling. Don't be surprised if the original was spelled Sobczak.

A lot of names from countries that did not use the Latin alphabet got mangled at Ellis Island. I knew someone in college with a spelling variant on this name. He is of Ukrainian origin.
