Position:Home>Genealogy> How to find detail about my grandmother who lived in Kracow Poland?

Question:My great grandmother lived in Kracow, Poland until she moved to Connecticut. I would like to find any details of her life in Kracow and maybe where she lived. So far I found I can order a copy of her US birth cert and application for SSN. I am wondering how you go about finding any detail of a person when they lived in Poland. She was born in the 1890s and I am still trying to figure out when she moved her. Also her husband came from Poland if you can think of any records or sources I could seek please inform me.
Thanks so much.

Depending on when she arrived, she may have applied for citizenship, and this could have a wealth of information for you. You need to know the parish when looking for Polish information. If she was born after 1890 then she was born after civil registration started and that makes things a bit easier.

Also see what happened to her affects - did she have pictures or diaries or had she written the family down in a Bible?

Was she married here or in Poland? Her marriage records both Church and civil might help if it was here.

Get "Polish Roots" and give it a read, and check out familysearch.org's library section and see if you have a church name if their records have been microfilmed.

The route to start research really depends on when they got here, and citizenship rules. So start there.

go to poland and find out

I would check ancestry.com. That was the best resource for finding out about my great-grandparents, it turned out they lived in a totally different country in Europe than I thought. They have very detailed records of immigration, birth and death certificates, and the like.

www.ancestry.com has an amazing collection of records, I believe they are offering a free trial at the moment why don't you have a look. If you had posted your grandmothers name I could have done a search on your behalf to see what I can find. You could also try www.familysearch.org it's completely free to use and download anything you need off there, that's the best free site on the Internet as far as I'm concerned.
Hope this helps.

Find an LDS church in your area. They have family history libraries and family history specialists and tons of resources. They can help you know how to get started on finding more details. Sometimes it's nice to talk to a real person, not just try to struggle through looking at websites. They will even help you get started on a 4 generation family tree (like the Osmonds did for Oprah on her show the other day). Go to lds.org to find the church closest to you, their libraries are usually open a couple times a week.
