Position:Home>Genealogy> Once removed? I just don't get it?

Question:Looking up family history, I am finding 5th cousin 1 time removed or 2nd Cousin 5 times removed .. What does that all mean?

It confuses me to no end .. If you can help, I would sure love to hear it.

Children of siblings are 1st cousins.
Children of 1st cousins are 2nd cousins.
Children of 2nd cousins are 3rd cousins.

If you can add 1 to a number, you can do that.

Your parents' 1st, 2nd, 3rd . . . cousins are your 1st, 2nd, 3rd cousins once removed. Your grandparents' cousins are yours twice removed and so on.

Your parents are one "up" from you; one generation before you. Your GP's two, so twice removed.

When your cousins have children, they will be your cousins too, but once removed. When your cousins have grandchildren, they will be yours in the same degree (1, 2, 3) but twice removed.

Will this chart help you sort it out, it confuses me as well,

hope this helps.

Go to the Internet and look up About.com-Genealogy.
They give a good explanation.

The children of your Aunts and Uncles are your Cousins there children are your first cousins once removed etc.

Second cousins are the children of your Great Grandparents siblings etc.

Good luck and good hunting
