Position:Home>Genealogy> Trouble with a name?

Question:I have asked this question a few times, so sorry if I'm boring you-but I've never had an answer.
Does anyone know someone with Johnstone as a first name? I don't mean surname, or missing the E off the end, I want to know I'm not the only one in the world.
And if I am, oh well!!

I've just thrown 3 surnames at the Electoral Roll and it has come up with 3 x Johnstone Smiths in Scotland,
1 Johnstone Williamson in Wiltshire; and 1 Johnstone Brown in London.
I expect I could find more but got to go shopping!

No offence but maybe your parents were not good at spelling. dunno

no, but i know a john who is stoned though!

Yes, my granny's neighbour is called Johnstone - there are a few in Northern Ireland x

could be worse mate just get over it

Yes

Great name, not come accross it before in current use. Wear it boldley and with the Pride it deserves. My wife has a unique name, can be shortened for convenience like yours. But there is some thing very special when an 'unusual' name is used in full. Hate my 'christian' name, boreing and common as.......

here's everything to do with johnstone.....

well you might be the only one now but I've found a few predecessors

http://www.familysearch.org - type in Johnstone Smith (I just picked the commonest surname) and it's no's 44, 69, 70 + 135
And of course that's just the Smiths.

Have you ever asked your parents why they picked the name? is it a family surname?
The people on that site mainly seem to be Scottish and there is a town called Johnstone in Renfrewshire (West of Glasgow) which probably spawned the surname which has been used as a first name by some due to it's similarity with Johnson.

I have never heard of anyone with the name Johnstone as a first name. How lucky are you if you are the only one in the world with that name. That makes you really unique!

However there was a peer called James, Wingate, Johnstone, Nobbs who lived from 1839 - 1909

If it is any consolation, some of my ancestors had surnames as a first name. It was not out of the ordinary back then. It used to be a way of honouring a mother's family as her name wouldn't be carried in the surname, or sometimes a Grandma or other relative. I have a few examples in my ancestral tree thus far.
You can always call yourself John for short. There are quite a few with the name Jackson, which is not too dissimilar and could be shortened also.

A search of FreeBMD gave a long list of hits for those with the first name Johnstone up until 1922. Try it here:

There are bound to be others out there as there are with other surnames as first names. You are not alone. Not to worry...it is quite cute also to have a surname as a first name :)

Best wishes.
