Position:Home>Genealogy> Need Help Finding old obituary?

Question:I am looking for an old obituary and or records of my grandmother on the internet. She lived most of her life in mass and also died here. I'm doing it to see if I could see more about her as well as show my mother because she would probably like to see her mothers information again. Can anyone help me find a website or something that'll help me with the search?

Hi there,

If she died in the early eighties, chances are that her obituary is not online. Your chances of finding obituaries online are only good if the person died in the last 5 years or so. There are quite a few newspapers that do have online archives but many of the archives don't go back that far and if they do, they will likely charge you an average of 3.00 per article to even VIEW it.

My advice to you, would be to locate her date of death on the Social security Death index.

Once you have located her date of death, I would write to the library in the town in which she lived. Most libraries will make a copy of the obituary for you for a nominal charge for copying and mailing.

Another approach would be to go to the Random Acts of Genealogical kindness site at
http://www.raogk.com/listing.htm
and see if there is a volunteer in the state and county in which the death took place. Keep in mind that it is standard protocol to reimburse the volunteer for copying and mailing expenses as well, unless they elect to do it free of charge. I hope this gives you a couple of new ways to renew your search!! Take care and good luck.

You didn't indicate when she died. You might try the following website.

http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/deathre...

Contact the local library there & they probably have the obits. Or you could contact the newspaper. If neither of these pan out, contact their genealogical society -- probably in Boston. They can help you. Most societies don't charge a fee for their services but are glad to receive a donation.

If you don't have a death cert you can obtain one in the county in which her death took place -- just contact the county clerk's office.

email me with all the info you have on your grandma and I'll see what I can find for you

rootsweb.com has a whole section dedicated to finding obituaries. It's located here:

http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Ob...

If you join the lists, you'll find members on the list who have access to not only ancestry.com but to many other subscriber services such as www.genealogybank.com. Those members will be more than glad to run a search for you on different sites.

Hope this helps!
