This is what www.ancestry.com has to say about the name,
Edwards
English (also common in Wales): patronymic from Edward.
and for this link I will get a shed load of thumbs down, but you have asked a question and I have given an answer.
http://www.houseofnames.com/fc.asp?sId=&...
hope this helps.

I think you can google that and get the answer>It should mean the same thing as Edward

House of Names has in fine print the following statement

"We encourage you to study the Edwards genealogy to find out if you descend from someone who bore a particular family crest.. . . . . . .. . .. . .. . No families, not even royal houses, can make sound claim to the right to bear arms unless a proven connection is established by attested genealogical records."

There are probably dozens that were granted to someone named Edwards. You may or may not be related to one of them.

Also see the links below one from the British college of arms and the other from the United States' National Genealogical Society."

Also, I'll get thumbs down for giving you this documented information.

Edwards is a patronymic for Edward. In other words when surnames were taken early to mid in the last melinium, there were men named Edward whose sons took the name Edwards. In other words it indicated that were the sons of an Edward.

Rootsweb(freesite) has over 526,000 entries for Edwards. Just pull up the site and put Edwards in the World Connect block. When you get to the trees, if you see something that interest you, probe on a name and it will take you to a screen that will give you the name and email address of the submitter.

Now, you have to be very careful about taking as fact everything you see in family trees on any website, free or paid. The information is user submitted and most is not documented. You will frequently see different information on the same person from different submitters. Then you will see repeatedly the same information from different submitters without documentation.
Unfortunately, a lot of people are copying without verifying. There are errors in family trees on the internet.

Use the information as clues as to where to get the documentation.

As far as the meaning of Edwards go, I have nothing more to add than what has already been said. This question caught my attention because I descend from a line of Edwards. Actually, I have traced in my family tree on my mom's side between her mom and her dad that I descend from the same line at least 3 times -- through each of her father's parents and through her mother's mother. All of my lines of Edwards go back to a Richard Edwards, born about1523, whose mother was Agnes Blewitt (spelling??). Agnes had 3 sons. Two of her sons are claimed by her husband as his. The 3rd, Richard, is not. Agnes' husband, William Thomas Edwards, would not claim Richard as his. It was suspected Richard was the result of an affair Agnes had, but that Richard took the Edwards from his mother's husband's name to avoid shame. Though historically, the affair is undocumented, it is suspected that the affair, which is speculated to have produced Richard, was with King Henry VIII. It is somewhat documented that King Henry VIII was fond of this child, though never claiming him either as his son. So the real father of Richard Edwards remains unknown with absolute certainty, but evidence suggests that King Henry VIII is a possibility.

It was probably shortened from Edwardson which means som of Edward
