Benthebus has given you the best answer so far. If your aunt died in the last 45 years or so, the Social security death index is probably your best starting point. If she died prior to 1962, the SSDI would not be your best starting point. Here is the link to the index:

http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-b...

A couple of things though.
1) Not EVERYBODY is in the SSDI. There are more people added today then in days past (i.e children and people of working age who never drew social security) Also, my grandfather isn't in the Social Security Death index because he worked for the railroad and earned benefits under the Railroad Retirement board, rather than Social security. There are alot of other little idiosyncrasies, but I won't get into them in this post.

2) Make sure that you search under alternate spellings of the name if it doesn't come up. I myself, have had relatives names mispelled in the index. Play with the advanced features available. I would first try their legal proper name; however, if that doesn't work, try their first initial and their last name. With women, you might have an additional challenge. I have an aunt who was married several times and even though she had a particular name when she died, her entry in the SSDI shows her with one of her previous married names. The moral of the story is this... just because you don't find her right away doesn't mean that she isn't there.

If you have any additional questions or would like help searching the index, please feel free to e-mail me via my profile. I would be happy to help. Take care.

A parent, child, sibling or spouse can write to the New Jersey Bureau of Vital Statistics and Registration for a copy of any vital records, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or death certificates. Proof of identity and relationship, and a fee ($25) is required to receive a copy of such information.

I think anyone can get an uncertified copy, no proof of relationship is required.

Of course, if you want to get the information for free, and you know where she is buried, you can go find the grave and get the information from the headstone or grave marker.

I don't know how it works in the U.S.A but here in the U.K you can find out through the registrar's of Births,Deaths and Marriages.

Failing that if she was a resident in a care or nursing home they should be able to tell you, or if you know where she is buried you can go and see the vicar of that churchyard and he will have a record of it. The council also have to record it so if shes buried in a state cemetery enquire at your council for that area.

If she was cremated the crematorium should also have the relevant information.

Good Luck Hun hope this has helped and you find where she is laid to rest xX
