Position:Home>Genealogy> What is the best site on the web for geneology?

Question:The Sept 2007 issue of Family Tree Magazine lists 101 best websites & is updated yearly. The best of the best? Ancestry.com. However you must pay for it. As a long-term genealogist I consider it to be worth every penny -- and then some.

Holly N above must be unaware of the documentation which can be obtained through the internet. Census records are available on ancestry.com & you can track ancestors thru them back to 1790. You can obtain on-line military service records, cemetery records, Ellis Island.....the list goes on and on.

Best free site has to be www.familysearch.org
Best subscribed site www.ancestry.com or
www.ancestry.co.uk
these are just my own favourites.

Honestly none. The best way to do genealogy is the old way. Sifting thru documents one at a time. The internet should only be used as a tool. You still have to document whatever you find.

I feel Ancestry.Com is best for its records. However, you are not going to find all records on any website.

Just be careful about taking as fact everything you see in family trees on any website, free or paid. The information is user submitted and most is not documented.
You might see different information on the same person from different submitters. Then you will see repeatedly the same information from different submitters on the same person. Unfortunately, there is a lot of copying being done without verifying. Use the information as clues as to where to get the documentation.

If you want to pay for service try www.ancestory.com, a free service is www.familysearch.org

As always, when you get facts, you still need to get the records that back them up.

Another good resource is www.cindislist.com, has links to many different web sites
