Does anyone know what blackdutch means?

Question:Many people refer to Black Dutch as many different things.

During the time of the Trail of Tears, some Native Americans used the term to prevent the government officials from re-locating them. The term was loosely used as a description for dark-skinned individuals. There are many old newspaper articles about this at www.genealogybank.com.

At other times, people used the term to mean Spaniards who migrated from Spain to the Netherlands and surrounding countries. Some considered certain genealogical German lines to be Black Dutch (again, skin color and build).

Some people refer to the ties between the Jewish community as they relate to their individual family lines in the Netherlands. (New Amsterdam Jews and the Delaware Indian tribe also).

There might be a connection to the gypsies but none that my research has found as yet.

Yahoo has a few groups dedicated to the subject of the Black Dutch and they seem to be pretty active. You might also want to research the Melungeons.
