Question Home

Position:Home>Genealogy> If you bought a very old house that came with alot of history would you?

Question:name it? Our house is the oldest house in the intire neighborhood & it sits way off the road on a hill. It looks haunted but we love it. To us our house is big enough to have it's own name. After we research everything we want to name our house either after the first owners or the person who built it back in 1835?
Then have a arch put over the entry to the drive way that says "The Becker House" & under it in smaller print put 1835. I think that it would be neat

You rock, girl.
It wasn't difficult at all to find the original land grantee for the property where we used to live. From that, I researched something about the family, and located descendants who had further info.
Don't forget to check with the local historical society. Some properties will be eligible for historic markers from the state, or designated historical status. Putting together a written file about who had it, something about the interim, etc. is something that should be made available, and some descendant 100 yrs ago, will be blessing you for your efforts.

Sounds like a fun thing to do. Go for it. Knowledge about your heritage, or the heritage of your area, is always a good thing.

definitely

its great that ur buying an old house. too many ppl are building new houses and letting old ones sit or tearing them down.

i really like the arch idea...i think i want to buy and old house just so i can do that.....;)

yeah I agree with the others. It sounds like a good idea. Honoring the orginial owners would make them happy :)

I think it's neat that you appreciate the house's history, and that you therefore plan to give it a worthy name. Naming it after the original owner or builder is one way to honor its history, but people might think that YOU are "the Beckers".
So, since you were drawn to this house and you love it, you might consider giving it a name that says something about you and your family, like "Smith's Destiny" or "Home at Last".
Good luck with your lovely "old new" home!

Hi,

Wow, in rejuvenating this lovely old lady, I believe that you are doing something wonderful. A nice idea would be to bring her back to what she once looked like in her prime. Have you tried your local library or historical society for old photos/ or paintings depicting the home.

If you choose to name the house, I would recommend naming it after the original owner/builder.
ie. "The Becker Homestead, 1835"

Best wishes,
Di (aka Suzanne)

Do it!!!
