Question:My maternal Grandfather was supposed to be of a family that were original settlers in Santa Cruz, CA. He was born in Doyle or Doyal (not sure of the spelling of the word) Colony somewhere there in Santa Cruz, CA. My Mother never spoke of her family and I am trying to do a background check. Would greatly appreciate any assistance! The family name was Arana. Any of you out there?

this is one of 9 files at rootsweb, using the surname Arana and Santa Cruz (county)as the birthplace.
It looks that the family was there prior to 1880. Using that, you can run the 1880 census search at www.familysearch.org, and filter to insure that you pick up all persons of the name who were living in the county that year.

This looks to have many articles that you may need. I did not make any effort to narrow down to Doyle or Doyal, since what you want may not be under that term.
