What is it that you define as public records?
If you mean vital statistics (birth/death), those are all independent, and related to where (and when) the event happened. In most of these, if you are looking for the last 100 yrs, you may (or may not) find indexes. The documents themselves will not be online, since most states restrict them to authorized persons.
There are many sites that offer searches for these types of records on a fee basis. Public does not always mean online, however.
