I have done a search of the death indexes on www.ancestry.co.uk I couldn't find any record of Elizabeth's death in the year range that you gave. I will continue to search as any detailed search by the historian at the library will need at least the year this happened.
I have also been in contact with someone from the local studies library, by phone and I am just in the process of emailing the person. They will do a search for any newspaper reports on the mystery for you, they take photo copies of the report and post them out to you.
I'll carry on searching and see what I can find for you.
i was in workington once it was closed
I suggest you send for her death certificate which will give you cause of death, as well as the date and place. You could try a search of local papers here http://www.cultrans.com/search.html?orde...
if there was an inquest you may find coroners records that will give details. Otherwise I would suggest joining the appropriate genuki mailing list, the path is Genuki - England - Cumbria - genealogy
There aren't many people living in Workington itself with the name Lightfoot - I can find only 4 names on my Electoral Roll which is now about 3 years old. They are all at different addresses.
One of them might know the family story.
You could try www.192.com to see if there is a listed telephone number or maybe, write to The Readers Letters Column of the local newspaper asking if someone knows.
Some libraries keep local newspaper archives.
You can e-mail me, if you like. Unfortunately, I can't contact you.
