I think Polish...

It's on this list:
german or something in the area. maybe POLISH!
http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/Fact...
this shows that the name was in the US by 1920, but not in 1880; and the name is not picked up on the NY passenger lists. That does not preclude a misspelling, or the family came through a different port. 12 persons with the name are in the social security death index.. of course, for just Efrus, the ladies are probably there by marriage.
The other poster picks it up on a site, that shows possible Polish. It can be very difficult to pin down families in the 1800's in East Europe, since their were numerous boundary changes, and Poland did not even exist for a time.
The BEST way (and most accurate) would be finding your immigrant ancestor. For example..if your grandpa Efrus turns out to be the one who came over.. his death certificate is the most valuable record. Then, assuming he was one of those who WAS living in the US in 1920, you should be able to find him in 1930, 1920, and MAYBE earlier. By looking at those, and birthplaces of the listed children, it is likely that you can narrow down the estimated year of immigration.
You would also look closely at the immigrant to see if he was a naturalized citizen or not, then go for that record. Did he have social security? If he died after 1960ish, then he is probably in the online index. There ARE files for those who are not on the index, who died before they started computerizing. The file/ application will provide more info.
All of the actual records here are where you will find the specifics of his origins. Even if he was actually born in Poland, there are different ethnic groups there.
I think the name is Russian in origin. I looked in the census of 1930 and people with that last name who were immigrants to the the U.S. were born in Russia. They had first names of Morris, Israel, Sarah, Jacob and Samuel. So, it could be that the were Russian/Jewish.
Hey,
It's a Polish ( could also be Ukrainian or Russian) JEWISH surname.
