there is a John Whitener listed in the social security death index, who was born 1908, ss card issued in Kansas, and died Dec 1972 in Kansas City, Missouri. If this is your person, you could try to locate his death record and obit, and see what it says about family or siblings.

edit-
the poster asked for help finding DESCENDANTS. Finding any of their children can open that door.
Re: John and Carrie. what were their middle names or the names of their parents? Knowing this might help a researcher know if they are looking at the right record or not and could track forward from that point. I'm not finding any census record on Narbert (unusual name) but you might want to check rootsweb or ancestry (your local library has free ancestry if they subscribe to it).

Challa isn't on the 1920 census for Bourbon County, KS.

I'm seeing an obit listing for John R. in the Hickory Daily News in Hickory, NC. You can contact the Hickory Library for a copy ($2.00 postage). The link is here for the index: http://www.hickorygov.com/library/geneal...

It might not be your John R. but the only way to know is to obtain a copy of that obit. There are volunteers at www.raogk.com who can look things up but there are none for the county that Hickory is located in so your best bet would be to go through the library.
