Have a look at the link I have posted for you, it's a site that has hundreds of old photographs from the Durham area, the page its on is for shops, pubs any business at all really. All you have to do to view the photo is click on the blue writing the 'title' of the photograph, the date at the side is when the business was up and running, for more photos go to the foot of the list and click search again. If you would like to email me giving me the name and address for your grans shop/business I can do a more detailed search on your behalf.

Try your Central Library which probably has a whole section on local history, books, photographs, etc., in the Reference Section, and your County Record Office.
You will find details of the licensees, dates, etc. and there are probably loads of photographs - pubs were a favourite for photographers.
You could also try the Family History Society (which will have hundreds of helpful members) for County Durham - ask Google for details - and also ask Google for your Family Name - you could strike lucky and find that someone has already put something on a web site.
You could try going to this page and signing up to the mailing list. There may be someone on it who remembers the area and the shop.
