Position:Home>Genealogy> Question for very experienced genealogists?

Question:I have been doing this seriously for 25 years. And do support many genealogy boards (just started supporting this one) because many experienced people helped me out when I first got started and quite frankly, it's fun. But my "circle" that I have been part of for these 25 years, just because of years passing, is getting smaller.

Does anyone know of a forum/board that is really geared for the very experienced genealogist. I've not been able to find one. As you can image, the "questions" I have are not exactly basic, and have a lot to share that would not be very useful for the newbies. But know that like just about every experienced person I know, I will continue to support the forums, not only to pay back for the help I have been given, but because I love the explosion of interest in what I obviously find to be a very rewarding and important venture.

You certainly score points for the non-run of the mill question for the day!
One thought that I mention a lot here, is that people are misled often by the expectation that it *should* all be online. You, of all, understand this. You already have what is in most of the databases, and what you are looking for (research wise) is likely going to be solved by actually going on site. Off the top of my head, you'll run into more experienced persons at places such as Natl. Gen Society, or other long standing organizations. Even at that, much will be theoretical. I often suggest the email lists at rootsweb, and sure enough, there are 14 lists coming up with key word of professional (whether you actually are or not). I then hit the keyword how to, and there is a list for advanced! Take a look.
Definitely, though, most who have been around a while, are more likely to be doing local projects, maybe manage a county genweb page, or otherwise coordinating resources for the benefit of others coming in.
For many reasons, my own research is on the back burner. What is cool over here is that there are admittedly a LOT of basics (to say the least) but if you hang out, you see new persons hanging in and progressing.
Wendy is absolutely right. Now if we could get them to stop asking the same question over and over it would be even better. There are so many that think you put in your name in a search engine and out pops your family tree. I wish we could get it thru to them that is not how it works. You have to research just like us old timers have long before the computers came around.

Glad to have you aboard. We need more experienced researchers on here. I too have seen the groups become smaller over the years. Some have just lost interest others have passed on and others are still at it.

Have you thought about teaching genealogy at maybe the local library on Saturday's? I started that where I live and we get quite a group from time to time. I do it 2 Saturdays a month in the winter (we don't get snow) and 1 Saturday in the summer. I get them started, recommend a book that I dearly love and help them find places that will be useful to them. I don't get paid for it. It's strictly volunteer. I feel good that I have help someone else get started and they feel good because they finally know how to trace their roots. A Win Win situation for all.
You're right, there aren't many. In the Detroit/Windsor area, we have several groups that meet regularly, but we're not much on boards. Everytime we've started boards, people got possessive and things fell apart. Rootsweb has a few good boards, but they're not particular to experienced genealogists. There are also a few private boards that are pretty decent, especially if you're into Polish or French-Canadian genealogy. But they're members-only and you have to belong to the societies to participate. Back before Ancestry took over Rootsweb, Lou Szucs used to have a phenomenal board with live chats every night. But Ancestry wouldn't support the live chat format, so they just hired Lou and use her for newsletters and research, but no more boards.

Welcome aboard, though. We really need good people who are interested in sharing solid research. The explosion of "House of Names" scams has gotten old around here and maybe we can stir up some really interesting things to research.
www.rootschat.com welcomes genealogists of all levels of experience, but there are many very experienced gelealogists on there with excellent knowledge, including many professionals, and it's a great community. Give it a try.
I am not answering this question as a genealogist, I am just a really keen to learn researcher, It is my intention to eventually become a probate genealogist, but I have a lot to learn between now and then, and will continue my studies to achieve my goal.
Are you in the UK, if you are there are quite a few genealogical organisations that would benefit from your wealth of experience, I just wondered, I have a few suggestions but if you aren't in the UK then there's not much point in me making my suggestions.
I don't think we have any qualified genealogists representing the UK on this Yahoo forum, I think we are all amateur researchers, if you are in the UK and a qualified genealogist I am sure I am sure I will get to know now.
