Question:

Genealogy - Do any of you kind people out there know of any free genealogy sites for tracing my uk ancestors?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The first person who answered gave a good reply, here are the links to some sites already mentioned.
http://www.familysearch.org/
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/datab...
Have a look at these sites, if you need any help getting started, if you just edit your question to include names, locations, birth dates?, death dates, anything you think will help the excellent researchers that frequent this forum, we all just love to help. FreeBMD has alot of stuff indexed (note indexed not originals)
Also Familysearch.org is the Mormon churhes free website which has the 1881 UK census on line plus an index of parish register entries from 1538 to about 1900.
Please note that for accuracy you will need to check the original source material once you have got info of the indexes - the transcribers are only human and I have found errors. your first answer from D B is the correct one.

there's also a Mormon site that does it but i have found that it isn't always correct. This site can also provide you with other useful information and links:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/

And FreeBMD has a sister site, http://www.freecen.org.uk , which has censuses, but parts of it are very incomplete - the Mormons' familysearch site is actually often more complete and accurate where the 1881 census is concerned (although I agree that their BMD information sometimes needs to be treated with caution).

This BBC page may also lead to useful links:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/familyhisto... As well as the excellent reply from DB it can depend on what area you are researching. Some areas have free online access various items such as the Wiltshire Wills project http://history.wiltshire.gov.uk/heritage... You can get some information from A2A (Access to Archives) Similarly there is a lot of parish register information available for Norfolk. It's just a question of googling. most do charge look for some that give you a few days trial but its tough going also try www.genesreunited.co.uk you can put in the part of the tree you do know and it might find a match to someone elses but then i think thats when you have to pay . Try the LDS family search site its very good try ROOTSCHAT its a great site with lots of helpful people
