Question:

Is an index of English Wills and Probate Proceedings for 1890-1920 available on-line?

I am trying to find out who were the next of kin of 3 men, 1 of whom died in 1891 in Lancashire, and the other 2 alive but in their 60s in Cheshire at the time of the 1901 Census. All are likely to have been wealthy enough to require probate proceedings.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I dont't think these are online. For wills from 1858 the thing to do would be to contact the National Probate Registry for a search. http://www.ancestor-search.info/nat-prob... Alternatively, you can search probate registers at National Libraries ie the British Library and the National Library of Wales. As you've probably done already, I've asked everything I can think of and it looks as though there isn't anything on line for the dates you mention.
Not knowing where you live, I'm wondering if there is a large library, such as Birmingham, close to you which has the Index for English Wills. I've used the Birmingham facility myself since I live in the Midlands although the ancestors are all from the South West.
