Question:

What does anglo indian mean?

I have found out that my mother is anglo indian by birth. What does it mean

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: anglo indian is refered to a person (christian) whose a mixture of a britisher who came to india and an indian.
if youre mother's an angloindian , either her parents are anglo indians or one's a britisher and one's an indian Source(s):
i know this coz my teacher is one and she told me.
now dont i deserve a best answer? That one of her parents was of Indian descent and the other English. Simply that she is of mixed race parentage. Her mother and father were either Indian or British, one of each! it means, indian but of english descent from when the British came over. .One parent generally white British other of Indian origin Either her parents or grandparents are of mixed parentage consisiting of Indian and British origin. it can mean two things

1.english\british indians
2. american indians (as in the red indians) It means she has both English and Indian heritage. It could be from either parent or both. Sometimes the English part can be any British origin, rather than simply english. It can mean that her family were white but lived in India in Colonial times. I won't attempt to compete with the previous definitions, all of which are probably correct.
My suggestion is that you sit down and actually research your individual ancestors, ie WHO are your mother's parents, grandparents, so forth, and exactly where did each of those persons come from?

Here is one site to help you. Looks like it is getting ready to move, but go quick and you can probably ride along. I have a friend who is Anglo Indian. AS some of the answerers have said it is someone of mixed parentage or heritage, indian and British. It dates back to when india was colonised by the british and there was some intermarriage.
My friend and his family are all brown skinned with black hair like full indians, but they are Roman Catholics and all have British Chritians names and a British surname. You said Anglo-Indian by "birth". To me that means her nationality was Indian because she was born in India, but that her heritage is English (Anglo). Of course her background could be mixed, you really need to research you family tree to answer that particular question.
