Same thing happened in my family - we are all mixed but we are Cherokee from Tennessee and Georgia. Often the Native Americans took in slaves and saved them from their masters so there are many families that are Native American and African American mixtures - Native Americans could not be enslaved and so they took great pity on black slaves and often took them into their tribes. Native Americans did not discriminate amongst the races and this was probably their demise for mixing with Caucasians |
