Can Anyone Tell Me How To Get My Dad's Service Records Without Having To Go To The VA Or Find Someone he Knew

I don't have my dads service number but he was in the south pacific with the command ships.I know of only one ship he was on but cannot find a listing of him being on the ship.I know that you can go to the VA and give them your birth certificate and as much infomation that you have and they will do a search but is there anywhere on the internet that you can find someone that knew him possibliy or a way to get the outfit he was with or his records from the service without going to the VA?
