Question:

I need any history possible on Candler, Nc. The names I am interested in are Smith or Hall.?

My daughter is doing an important school project and we need all the information possible. Thank you.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Teachers who don't know about genealogy sometimes give students projects that would take a competent genealogist a month to do. I aways advise people to lie.

Candler is in Buncombe county. Most genealogy is county-based, not town-based, because most people lived in the country before 1920.

Put "Smith" in the surname and NC Buncombe or Buncombe NC in the birth place. Repeat with Hall. You'll get 700+ Smiths and 28 Halls. Pick ones you like. (Play around with the Smiths, read all the Halls. You might find someone you arerelated to.) For the Smiths, try it with Candler, NC (You have to use the two-character abbreviation; it will find "NC", "N.C.", "N. Carolina" etc. The people who put it together are wizards of the finest caliber.)

Pick some who look reasonable and claim them as your great grandparents. Use 30 - 35 years between generations. If your daughter is 10, you are 40, give or take 10 years, so your parents are 75, grandparents would be born 110 years ago, 1st GP's 145 years ago, etc.

If you know your great grandparents' names and can find them there, great. If not, consider it a creative writing project. 80% of the people who lived before 1900 were farmers, so that is a safe occupation.

will tell you who was there in 1880. Select US Census, then NC, then Buncombe county. Leave town blank. Try both surnames. If you get a hit, click on the person, then "Household". Once you are in the Household view, click on Next/previous household 10 times. You might find your GGGGP's living within 10 houses of each other.

Best wishes!
