Joseph Cousins' engaging watercolor paintings have been recognized and praised for their unique quality and craftsmanship by collectors and critics alike. His work has received numerous best in show and honorable mention awards at art festivals in Maine and New England.

Mr. Cousins, as a young artist, was invited by the late Senator Muskie of Maine to a one man exhibit of his work in the Senate Building, Washington D.C. In the 1970s he was one of the Old Port artists who was influential in the artistic development of the Old Port section of the city of Portland, Maine.

Joseph's unique paintings have been chosen to be included for exhibit at Bowdoin College, the University of Maine, the Portland Museum of Art, the Maine Coast Art Gallery, the Maine Art Gallery, and the O'Farrell Gallery, Brunswick, Maine. His work is included in many corporate and private collections in the U.S. and abroad.

In recent years he has been visiting Naples, Florida in the winter, where he has found the different climate and landscape challenging and stimulating. His Florida creations have a different atmosphere but still are recognized as his own.

Joseph is currently working full time at his art and maintains a studio and gallery at his home in Freeport, Maine.

"A neighbor hanging laundry in the summer breeze, a cat sitting and watching in a sun lit window, the way a late day shadow stretches across a golden field, these are some of the everyday things I find stimulating and exciting.

"What's important to me as an artist is discovering new ways to look at the places and things that surround me, and interpreting them in paint or pencil in my own way.

"Being creative to me is about taking risks and discovering by chance your final results are not exactly where your first steps were to take you. The end results are part of the creative challenge I feel is important to keep my work fresh and new."
