Common wisdom and the healthcare community says that you should know 4 generations back.
Your generation,
your parents' generation,
grandparents generation and
great-grandparents generation.
Mostly this is for the sake of heredity issues in your DNA. Beyond that, the blood-line issues get too diluted.

Going beyond that and finding out who your G13-Uncle was in 1272 Bavaria is a great hobby but not really necessary.
