Question:

Does anyone know how to find a person who may be deceased but all you have is a name?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: If the person lives (or lived) in the United States, the first step is to search the Social Security Death Index. This is the closest thing to a national death index in the U.S. For example, http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/ . If a person died at least a few months ago, they are probably listed there (I won't go into the exact, special conditions under which a person might not be there because most folks wtih a SSN who died in the last few decades are listed.) If you find the person listed, that will give you an idea of in what state and even in what zip code.

Just because someone isn't listed, doesn't mean they aren't dead. For a few bucks you can search obituaries from all across the United States at http://www.obitsarchive.com/ .

If you can't find any indication that a person has died, they might still be alive. Try a people finder like http://zabasearch.com/ , or a professional directory like http://www.martindale.com/ for lawyers or http://webapps.ama-assn.org/doctorfinder... for doctors (there are also directories for some other professions).

There are also fee-based on-line databases, like http://www.intelius.com/ , which are surprisingly cheap. Try ordering a background check on yourself and you may be shocked by how much information people can find out about you!

Again, these suggestions are all for the U.S. I have no experience with searching for anyone in other countries, but I'm sure there are similar types of resources.

Best wishes for success in your search.
