Question:

Where does the surname Polen originate from?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The earliest 'Polen' records present on the LDS church site,
http://www.familysearch.org, are about 1130 A.D.
in a place called 'Meissen,,Sachsen, Preussen'.

The term 'Sachsen' meant the German Saxony. 'Pruessen'
or Prussia, is Germany.
"The term Saxony (German Sachsen, Latin Saxones, French Saxe) derived probably from the old Germanic term for "swordsmen". The Germanic tribe of the Saxony was first mentioned around 150 AD from Ptolemy, the Egyptian astronomer and geographer who developed the theory that that the earth is the center of the universe, with the Sun, Moon, and stars revolving around it. At this time, the tribe of the Saxony settled the area north of the Elbe river (north of Hamburg)."

Meissen is a city in east central Germany, in the state of Saxony (Sachsen), on the Elbe River, near the city of Dresden.

However Polen also means Poland, which could be the ultimate origin of the name.
