Question:

When a family name is passed down (John Doe ll, John Doe lll) does the individual always keep the same number?

For example, if I am one of 3 living John Does in my family, John Doe lll, and John Doe II dies, do I remain John Doe lll? Or do I move up to John Doe ll?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: No, you keep the number even after another John Doe's death. I.e., everyone keeps their name after death. It doesn't change what the remaining people are.
