Question:

How do you find ?

I met my mother this year, I was taken from her when I was 3 months old, she told me that her mother was native american, and that I am 1/4 native american, but she was not sure as to what Nation, because she was given up for adoption when she was very young, and has very limited info on her mother, so my question is, where can I find out if my family is native american, and to as what tribe or nation I am from !

If you can get all the information on Grandma that you can, her name, date and location of birth, you might come up with a vital record for her (birth, death, marriage).

Also, if you have that information, you can look at Dawes Rolls to see if she was registered there. There are adoption records too. You need to exhaust the records search first.

You can prove Native American heritage with DNA, and likely which tribe - but that will not tell you who your Ancestors specifically are. Here are some web sites to help you on your journey. This can take time, just keep at it. Each piece of new information leads to more.

Use INTERNET search YAHOO! SEARCH and look for ADOPTION VITAL RECORDS in your state.
