Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It's tricky. There have been Merdan's in England and the US, but I see a few Merdan families in Bayern and Sachsen, Germany, around the Turn of the century. I'm guessing there was a name spelling change somewhere along the line because I don't see many hits earlier than that.
