Ancestry.com gets expensive. Try the Family Search site, and GENFORUM, Roots.com, and Vital Records searching, and ordering (a better place to put your money).

For Vital Records, start with the town that the person was born in, or married or died. That is cheaper than going to the state, or some VR Finder. State level is about $40, and Town about $6 or so. These sites should help you a lot.
