Pedigrees can be a substitute for Family Tree or Ancestral File. And, that is what Genealogy is about. The Pedigree typically comes from a person and shows who contributed to them, (their gene pool).

Family Search is one site, that specifically mentions the word Pedigree. There are many sites that will help build a Family Tree, and many ways to research them. Vital Records are the proof of your Pedigree, so they would be important to mention in your research. Without proof, you have not pedigree - in humans it is lovingly called the 'Mailman Syndrome'. It is easy to prove a mother at birth, but a father, much more difficult, and error prone.

Below is a wikipedia definition of Vital Records, which are used to link a child to parents. When you get vital records for the parents, you then link to the Grandparents - and so on.
