Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Assuming that the only information you have to go on is his name, you could start by visiting www.rootsweb.com and do a Social Security Death Index search. If you find him listed there then that will give you the location of his last known address. Going from that information you would then do an online search to find out what newspaper/s there are from that location and either write to that newspaper for his Obituary and Death Notice or go to: www.refdesk.com/paper.html and see if they have an online edition of their paper and check out the Obituaries there (providing his death was fairly recent). If his death was before the newspaper went online then you will have to contact the local library to search their archives. From that, you can usually get some good information to help you continue your search for relatives and/or other sources of information on him, such as: a hospital or nursing home (if listed), the funeral parlor, the cemetery, the church where the services were held (if applicable), etc. And again, once you know where he passed away you can then contact the city/town hall to obtain a copy of his death certificate. From the death certificate you can find out his date of birth and location of birth which will enable you to search out his birth certificate as well.

Also, going back to the Social Security Death Index search, if he is listed, you can write to Social Security for his information (for a fee). This information slip will give you much information, such as: his full name (if he filled it out), his parents names, his occupation at the time, etc. When you do a SSDI search and successfully locate a name that you want, just click on the link provided for that name and it will explain in detail how and where to write to Soc. Security for his information.

Best of luck with your search.
