Polish last name help?

According to family legend, my surname is an Ellis Island corruption of a Russian corruption of a Polish name. The Russian version is "Buchmiet" (spelling?) but no one knows the Polish one. Any help?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: My mother's family was originally Hryc, which was changed to Chritz when they arrived. I found a site called polishroots.com that helped confirm our family legend and gave a lot of information about where the name came from.
