Question:

Looking for police records, burial info and possible coroners reports, what's the time frame of destroying?

my dad died when i was 1 yrs old, possible suicide. I don't know the story, and I don't even know where he is buried. No one in my family has ever given me this info. Is it possible to check the library in the town in which it happened for possible newspaper articles dating back to 1968 and will a cemetary give me plot information if i can give them proof he was my dad? Anyone out there who can give me directions would be greatly appreciated. It's a mystery to this day.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: My heart goes out to you. I have had a similar experience in my own family along these lines. THe Library in the town when he died probably does have some information on his death through local newspaper archives.. A death certificate would probably also be helpful and that can be found through the local county goverment. You might have to prove relationship for the certificate depending on what state you are dealing with. I don't believe that you should have to prove relationship to get cemetary plot information. On a personal note: People in your family probably don't understand why you want to know about this. They don't realize that the death of a parent even when the child was as young as you were, affects that child and thier children as well. Being open and honest about these things is the only way to ensure that it doesn't cause problems for generations to come. I wish people understood that the silence about something like this is worse than the knowledge. They are adding to the problem not helping it. Good Luck!
