Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: You travel in "rarified" company. Only 884 hits in Google for "Hiserote", but three of the first ten are either doctors or scholarly researchers.

has 54 entries for it, all but three in the USA. Of the three that are not, two are mistakes, unless there is a town named "Butte" in Boyd County in the NEtherlands. There IS a town named "Butte" in Boyd County in NEbraska, which leads one to guess someone mis-read the abbreviation.

has 61 with non-blank birth places, all in the USA.
One of them is a George Hiserote b. 1855, who lived in Iowa. Here he is in 1880:

Household:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
George B. HISERODT Self M Male W 25 IL Farmer NY NY
Rebeca HISERODT Wife M Female W 19 IA Keeping House PA OH
Maud HISERODT Dau S Female W 5M IA IL IA

Census Place Jackson, Hardin, Iowa

Hiserodt, in turn, looks Dutch or German, but I can't find it on the Ancestry name origins site and the only entries for it on the LDS site are, again, in the USA. Note that George's parents were b. NY, so the surname was in the USA before 1835, if he didn't lie and his dad was at least 20 when George was born.

My guess is that is started out something else, they changed the spelling to Hiserodt, then to Hiserote. It could be Dutch, German, Austrian or Swiss.

Google has 31,000 hits for "Hiserodt", so it looks more common.

Feel free to poke around in any of the sites I listed. You might be able to find something.
