A good place to find out what you need to know would be to contact the Buffalo Genealogical Society if they have one. The library there would know. Some societies keep their records at the libraries.

I began getting "Family Tree" magazine June, 2004. Each issue features 2 states giving a 2 page history of immigration to that state & lists all the sources you can contact in the state. Some of my issues are missing but you could go to your local library to see if they have already covered New York; I'm betting they have. I highly recommend getting this magazine; its worth its weight in gold.

If you subscribe to a genealogy service I recommend ancestry.com as they offer census info for other countries & are working on collecting data from rest of world. You can see the actual census records, for example, to print. They have the usual public records, many churches, cemetaries & milser records. I located a record of an ancestor who served in the civil war.
