i would really like to know about my ancestors and where they came from...i have asked my parents but they didnt know much about it

how can i research my ancestry for free??

and no not like, my parents and grandparents, i mean, wayyyy back like, at least the 18 century but i would love to get farther is possible

You can go way back, and much of it is free, but you must go through your parents, grand parents, etc.

That is how you know it is correct. There are many places on the internet free. However, not all genealogy research is free. For example, proving connections, or getting a clue may sometimes only come from a birth, death, or marriage record, and they cost money ususlly.

Here are a bunch of sites that will help you. Cindi's list is a list of lists - you can put in a country on the search, and that will give you a list of lists for that country, i.e. Scottland, etc.

LDS Family Search is excellent for finding surnames back in time. They have census, birth, death, and are global.

Ellis Island is great for immigration, to determine where someone came from that you know came to the USA via that port. There are more ports, and more methods for that too. Ellis is free.

GENFORUM has surname forums, where you may connect to people that have already done the research and can point you to a location where a family tree is already documented, which you may merge into your's. Caution on believing everyone else. One wrong person while climbing your tree, and you wind up in the wrong forest...
