Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Last names may or may not be reliable as to nationality, since a name that originated in maybe Scotland 600 yrs ago, could be anywhere in the world now.
No biggie if you are willing to just settle for general background on a name. You can get much more specific, if you actually take the time to research the person with that name, and see how far back you can prove that lineage, including real dates and locations. If you want to try that, google "beginning genealogy", and read some of the many tutorials. It isn't "instant" but it's a heck of a lot of fun.
