crest or tartan?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Other then Scotish Clan and some names in eastern Europe there are no Family name that entitle one to a Coat of Arms nor to a Family crest. Coats of Arms have always been a personal thing and Crest were use to show Loyality to an overlord (nolonger used out side of Scottish Clans).
You are in luck however as Mcallisters is one of the surame allied with Clan MacAlister and therefore do to this tie you are allowed to wear there Crest. This along with most Scotish Clan crest are found fairly quickly on Wikipedia. I posted the general link for others to use as you can see the crest as little to do with the art on House of Names they even got the motto wrong wich interestly belong to Clan Donald (better own as the Macdonald's). Looking other they do have the Crest very small on the top my bet is that House of Names is use the Chief arms as Family Arms and that is unlawfully indeed thought outlike you can still be taken to court in nation with a protected system of Helardy
