Question:

Louisiana Marriage Records from 1950's?

I am trying to locate a marriage record in Lousiana, the marriage and divorce would have both occurred between 1955 and 1965. I do not know the county or parish though. Does anyone have any idea?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: There are some things we can't find online...these are two of them. But they are public records...just not open for public perusal until 72 years after the event.

I would tell you that the easy answer is to just contact the Clerk of the Court for every parish in LA. That's the short answer. The other part to it is that you may never get a reply just sending blanket requests out. You also don't mention your relationship to the two spouses. If you're a child of the marriage, then you have a more legitimate reason for the info than does a complete stranger. This is important in some states. My very best suggestion is to call every Clerk of the Court for every parish. Tell them that you're looking for the divorce records on Mr. ******* and Mrs. ******* from the early 1960s. Then (important to say this right) ask, "Could you please look up the case number so that I can send in my request?"

There are a number of reasons why this is important, but the biggest one being it makes them pull up the record on their computer and verify that they have it. If they can't find it, then you move on and forget about that parish. If they refuse to look it up, then you need to either make a trip over there or ask if they have an index which can be searched and get a Rootsweb volunteer from that parish to find it for you. If they have it, then you don't need to look for the marriage record separately. There should be a copy of the license in the divorce procedings.

Otherwise, you have to go through one of those "we'll find the record for you" services that costs an arm and a leg.
